"בבוקר יום 3 באוקטובר 1984, בשעה 9:30, עליתי על טיסה של "סוויז אייר" מחרטום לאתונה, ומאתונה עברתי למטוס "אל-על" לישראל. ביום 4 באוקטובר 1984, בשעה 19:30 נחתי בשדה התעופה "בן גוריון". הנחיתה בשדה התעופה הישראלי והירידה מכבש המטוס אל אדמת הקודש מילאו אותי ואת חברי למסע אושר והתרגשות. כל אחד מאיתנו הרכין את ראשו אל אדמת הקודש וחווה רגעי אושר אדיר ובכי של שמחה...". במילים אלו נפתח ספרו של יעקב (מולועלם) סמואל "חולות של תקווה" בהוצאת אופיר ביכורים", המתאר את מסע התלאות מאתיופיה לסודן של נער בן ארבע-עשרה וחצי בתוך קבוצה של כמה עשרות אנשים. דרך לא נודעת המלווה בענן של חוסר וודאות, כדי להגשים חלום צנוע – חלומה של קהילה שלמה, שבמשך 2500 שנה ייחלה להגיע אל המדינה היהודית היחידה בעולם. רבים מבני הקהילה לא זכו להשלים את המסע, ונותרו מאחור בדרכים הקשות וצרובות השמש בדרך לסודן או במחנות הפליטים, מי ברעב ומי בצמא, מי במחלות ומי בסבל נוראי ובעינויים בכלא הסודני ובמחנות הפליטים השונים בסודן. המחבר מצייר את תמונתם של כל שלבי המסע, והוא עושה זאת מנקודת מבטו האישית תוך הקפדה על תיאורים, תחושות ורגשות. בנוסף משולבים בספר תצלומים מקוריים של חבריו של יעקב למסע, וכן צילומים של מקומות בהם שהו. כל זאת ועוד הופך את הספר לפיסת היסטוריה אותנטית ממקור ראשון, המוצגת באופן מרתק. "עוד מעט אצא לטיסה הראשונה בחיי. לאחר ימים רבים כל-כך של סבל, רעב וצמא, עינויים וצער נעזוב את סודן. כנראה כל המבצע המסובך הזה יסתיים בשלום. זה סופי. השמחה והאושר היו קשים לתיאור. עוד כמה שניות. הודיעו ברמקולים שהמטוס ימריא עכשיו, שנתכונן ולא נפחד. הדלתות נסגרו והמטוס החל לזחול לעבר מסלול ההמראה..."
